Shine Music School - The History

Shine Music School opened in January 1993. It was founded by Prof S Sajin and at its outset it consisted of one teacher – Prof. Sajin - and three students in a small room in the suburbs of Johannesburg .

Today the school has a staff of eight experienced teachers who teach a wide range of instruments as well as singing, music theory and music history.

More than 1600 students have passed through the halls of Shine Music School of which 280 have successfully completed the practical ABRSM examinations and 132 have passed the ABRSM theory examinations with more students preparing for the exam every day. In addition to this, numerous students have successfully prepared their Music Matric exams through the school.

To date the school has staged 46 concerts in which the best students perform in order to get acquainted with the rigors of public performance and build their confidence as performers. The concerts also serve as social events which bind the school together as a unit. This is the occasion when the teachers, parents, students and friends meet to share and appreciate music together. The concerts continue to be staged at frequent intervals. Please visit the concerts section for more information and photos.

Our students frequently participate in local competitions like the Randburg Eisteddfod, the ATKV, the National Guitar Competition and the Johannesburg Festival for the Advancement of Music where they have performed exceptionally well over the past fifteen and won high praise as well as numerous prizes.

Shine Music School - The Philosophy

At Shine Music School we consider Music a universal language that transcends difference and crosses cultural and racial boundaries.  It is through our approach to teaching and our approach to people at the school that we attempt to apply this philosophy and not only provide a sound musical education but bring people together for years to come.

All living beings have an inclination towards music. Music is in the spirit of every being - not only human but plant and animal too. Cows listening to classical music produce more milk and plants grow faster when exposed to classical music. People who frequently engage in musical activities are not only more passionate and motivated but it was also found that music practice grows the area of brain that is used for processing sounds: the auditory cortex. It has also been proven that depriving children of music can seriously inhibit their intellectual potential.

Beethoven once said "I must despise the world which does not know that music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy." We recognise music as the most important revelation of the human race and the significance that it should play in every person's life in order for a person to grow, develop and rejoice in life.

"Being at the Shine Music School created more than just an opportunity to learn about music. This is where I experienced the privilege of learning, learned a lot about myself, experienced other people and had the chance to perform in front of a live audience as a trained guitarist. I would recommend this school to anyone who wants to learn about life and tunes that make more than just their feet tap- it teaches the rhythm of life!"
